Our community

And in our spare time, we support the Wandle Trust.

Based, as we are in South West London, we proudly support this local conservation group dedicated to restoring and maintaining the health of South London's River Wandle and its catchment.

The River Wandle is a unique South London chalkstream which flows north from Croydon and Carshalton to join the Thames at Wandsworth.

In Victorian times, the Wandle was one of the hardest-working rivers in the world, with 90 mills along its 11 mile length, and water so pure and clear that it attracted prestigious printers like William Morris and Arthur Liberty.  Yet by the 1960s, the Wandle was officially declared a sewer, running pink, blue and all the other colours the tanneries were using.

Thanks to the hard work of many Wandle Trust volunteers, and the generous support of sponsors such as Thames Water, the river is now being restored to its former glory as one of the world’s great chalkstreams.

The Wandle Trust holds community river cleanups on the second Sunday of every month, up and down this unique urban chalkstream – pulling out everything from shopping trolleys to shotguns, and improving the environment for birds, fish, insects and local people.

They are also helping to re-engage local children with their home environment through the annual Trout in the Classroom project.  This involves children, from local schools, hatching trout eggs and raising the fry in their classrooms for later release into the Wandle. It’s an experience not easily forgotten, and all the evidence shows that the kids are encouraged to look after their local rivers and environment for years to come.
